Distinguished and Famous people from Hervey Bay
🏛️ Ted Sorensen
Ted Sorensen’s connection with Hervey Bay includes local schooling and a long career in public office. He attended Torquay School and Hervey Bay High School, later serving as a city councillor and mayor from 2000 to 2008. He represented Hervey Bay in the Queensland parliament from 2009 to 2020. The parliamentary record also identifies his earlier work as a grazier. His record connects local schooling and a rural working life with service at both council and state level.
📚 Edgar Wells
Edgar Wells retired to Hervey Bay in 1974 after a long Methodist ministry that included Arnhem Land and Queensland communities. Retirement did not end his studies: he completed an arts degree at the University of Queensland in 1978 and later published his account of the Yirrkala mining dispute. There he had protested the removal of land from the reserve and supported the community’s concerns, without claiming authorship of its bark petitions. Hervey Bay is his documented retirement home, a quieter chapter after the difficult arguments of his earlier public life. He later moved to Melbourne.
